New data showing a sharp decline in iPhone shipments due to weakness in China is unwelcome news for investors in Apple. Sluggish iPhone sales this year have been well documented, and they're the reason Apple shares have fallen roughly 9% in 2024. First-quarter numbers from International Data Corporation (IDC) show the extent of the weakness, with iPhone shipments dropping 9.6% year-over-year to 50.1 million units — its sharpest year-over-year loss out of the top five smartphone brands. That put Samsung back in first place for phone shipments, after Apple held the crown for all of 2023 . The U.S. has passed a series of export controls starting in October 2022 aimed at restricting China's access to advanced chip technology, particularly those used in AI applications. According to data from tech consultancy Omdia, China consumes nearly 50% of the world's semiconductors as it is the biggest market for assembling consumer devices. But, soon after, it was reported that Nvidia was working on a new chip made for China. The company did not respond to a request for comment on their plans for the China market. An analysis of Huawei's Mate 60 Pro smartphone by TechInsights revealed an advanced chip made by China's top chip maker, SMIC.

Investors may want to keep an eye on Marvell Technology , as it is poised for artificial intelligence success, according to Wall Street analysts. The commentary comes on the back of the chipmaker's AI event on Thursday, where it announced a new compute customer many speculate could be Microsoft. On the back of the event, Wells Fargo analyst Gary Mobley lifted 2025 revenue and earnings per share estimates to account for a quicker ramp in AI sales. While Morgan Stanley continues to view the stock as an AI winner, analyst Joseph Moore noted he still favors Nvidia. That is in part due to the "sideways" action Marvell has experienced over the past year and its elevated multiple.

A flagship stock like Nvidia (NVDA) takes a month-long breather and many investors want to throw in the towel on the uptrend and say enough is enough. The last time we spoke about NVDA was on Feb 21st just before the earnings report, while I was on a ski vacation. Turning down to the 195-minute chart (that is a half-day chart), we can fine tune our entry on this idea. I added a one-half position size to our short-term Active Opportunities portfolio with stops just below the $832 low.
